I Couldn’t do a single move

Hello friends!

It’s been a while! I’ve been busy growing a tiny human, learning to raise him, and getting to know a new version of myself that is continuously evolving.  They say motherhood changes everything, and they ain’t lying!  While it has given my life more purpose than ever before, maternity leave has also re-invigorated my passion for both climbing and coaching.I’m back, and I am more excited than ever!

Grace and Grit Climbing is about MORE than just climbing.  Today, I have a short story to share with you, in hopes of inspiring you to find your own blend of grace and grit.

Recently, I went to visit an old mini project.  I tried this route briefly in 2024 and had figured out all the beta, but left for the season before having the opportunity to go back. and try to send.

A year and a half later, after growing, delivering, and raising a baby, I went back.

I couldn’t do a single hard move on the route.

Initially, I was pretty disappointed.  Coming back to climbing at the age of 40, aiming for my pre-baby level, was proving much harder than I’d imagined.  The months of broken sleep, interrupted workouts, mental overload, and energy demands of breastfeeding were weighing heavier than I’d realized.

But I knew beating myself up would be anything but productive. This was the perfect opportunity to practice giving myself grace.

The truth is, it had only been a few weeks since my baby started giving us longer stretches of sleep at night and these few weeks of finally "starting to feel like a human again" couldn’t instantly erase the 16 prior months of feeling like my body and life were completely taken over.  I knew a little grace was absolutely warranted.

But with that grace, my ambitious grit was also revived and raring to go.  Because here is the thing: I DO care about climbing.  I love it.  And while nothing is more important to me than my child, I believe there is still space for me, too.

As a mother, my time and schedule are no longer completely my own.  To make this work, I have to be incredibly focused and deliberate with my time, and deeply flexible (and gracious with myself) where I simply don't have control.  And maybe biggest of all, I have to be willing to face my fears and tackle my weaknesses, because growth never happens in the comfort zone.

There is Space for You, Too

Maybe for you, the thing that took over your life wasn't pregnancy or a baby.

Maybe you are buried in text books and lab hours for grad school.  Maybe you are navigating a massive career change, or drowning under the weight of heavy family or work obligations.

Whatever your "life happened" chapter looks like, the result is often the same: you look at the wall, you look at your passion, and you feel like you've lost your footing.  You feel like there's simply no time left for you.

But you are still here because climbing matters to you.  And you don't have to choose between the life you are building and the athlete you want to be.
